Folk Lore and Old Wives Tales

Did you know it used to be Crows not Magpies the rhyme was said for?

Here are some more Old Wives Tales and Folk Lore for you. The crows rhyme says the following:

See one for sorrow

See two for mirth

See three for a death

See four for a birth.

The Magpie rhyme is:

One for sorrow

Two for joy

Three for a girl and

Four for a boy

Five for silver

Six for gold

Seven for a secret never to be told

Eight for a kiss

Nine for a wish

Ten for a sight never to be missed!

If you hear 2 crows fighting, it is not a good sign as bad weather is on the way.

If you are out at night and you see bats flying low, you shall soon meet your future partner, but if one of them touches you, even if very lightly beware of the person you love now.

If a bride on her way to be married sees a flock of birds in full flight, she will have healthy children.

They who hurt a robin or wren will never ever prosper again.

News of a death if an owl sits on your rooftop and hoots!

England used to be called “The Ringing Isle” because of the music of her church bells, which are said to drive away evil spirits. Bells were given names; later they were inscribed with inscriptions such as this one:

“Ye people, all who hear me ring, be faithful to your God and King.”

Other inscriptions would honour the givers of the bell:

“All you in Bath that hear my sounds thank Lady Hoptons hundred pounds.”

And

“Ring boys, and keep awake, for (name of donator) goodness sake.”

The bells of Glastonbury would peel a rebuke:

“Our tones would have been much deeper, if contributions had been much greater!”

If you heard a funeral bell toll whilst you were eating, it was said to foretell you would have problems with your head!

There is another rhyme I think most people know this one, but I cannot remember it clearly:

Oranges and lemons say the bells of St.Clement’s

Hang your head low say the great bells of Bow

You owe me 5 farthings say the bells of St. Martin’s

When will you pay me say the bells of Old Bailey?

When I grow rich say the bells of Shoreditch.

I hope somebody can let me know the full and proper version, thank you.

England has been known by many names over the Millennium’s, in the Bible written 5,000 years ago Britain traded as a country all around the world. England is referred to as The Angel Isle, as most traders met the Druids of that time.  In the Bible it is also referred to England as The Stone, which stood like a fortress of solid stone, standing alone in the most dangerous sea of all, the North Sea, completely impenetrable by any invaders, plus their soldiers were referred to as unbeatable, the Arcadians which were before the Celts. The only way anyone landed in England was if they were invited in by the ruler of the time. Hence our “Rule Britannia, Britannia, rules the waves, Britain never, never ever shall be slaves.

The reason is supposed to be that before we were ever invaded, the Druids and Witches could control the sea around them, so any signs of invasion and they would call up a storm so the invaders boats would crash before reaching the shore line.

Witches and Druids are said to be the original tribes of Arcadia, before ever mixing outside their races. They were the ones who eventually refused to take Christianity, and carried on with their lives as had been for thousands of years. Of course we all know what came of that!  Like all root races of the world, others tried to wipe them out of existence.

The original word for Woman in Gallic is Witchen, so when the original tribes of Britain refused to take Christianity they were named Witchens, Wiccans and Witches, depending on how the word was pronounced.

This goes as far as saying that when Queen Elizabeth 1st knew the Spanish were about to invade, she supposedly called on the Witches of England to raise a storm to stop the Spanish invasion, even though it was around the time of the Witch hunts.

Well I think we all know the outcome of that one. Could be they succeeded, even under threat of death. Whatever happened true or not, the country was saved from invasion by the storm.

So, far we have some of the various names given to England, here are the rest:

Arcadia.

Anglia.

The Angel Isle.

The Stone.

Albion.

Britannia.

The British Isles.

England.

Gt. Britain.

U.K.

United Kingdom.
