Folk Lore and Superstitions

There will be some superstitions you know well and some not so well, some of them silly and some of them you will want to tell.

I have tried a lot of these superstitions by tempting fate! The outcome of my experiences from doing this is I will no longer do some of them again. Some I stick to because they work, like trying to get a child to be ambidextrous to make them more intelligent. These however are my own feelings, it is the individuals own experience that matters in the end. I do think that a lot of them could be warnings from the sub-conscience self so you can avoid the event portended. As in if you do spill sugar remember not to get upset with someone you love, you have been warned so try and avoid if possible.

It is best not to walk under ladders, mainly because there is a chance something could fall on your head!

Do not bring May blossom into the house, it is unlucky.

Do not buy new brooms, brushes, toothbrushes or hairbrushes in May or you will have a bad year financially.

Do not keep dried flowers for decorations.

Do not cross someone on the stairs, it could mean you arguing.

When you spill sugar accidently, it means you will argue with a loved one.

If you drop a knife it means an argument in the house, wash it straight away under running water. The same goes for a pair of scissors.

Never look at someone in the eyes through a mirror, when you are both standing in front of a mirror, your friendship or relationship could die.

Do not buy anyone a gift that is sharp, such as a knife, swords or scissors, if you do you should give a penny with it. Of course the above 2 superstitions could work for you if you want someone out of your life without hurting their feelings in any way, as either of the above will cause a natural and mutual separation.

If a broom falls over from where you have stood it up, it means a stranger is coming to your house and will do a great favour for you.

On no account put new or even old shoes on a table, or anywhere off of ground level. It is a sign of a death.

It is best to not put a child in shoes until 2 months after the child has learned to walk. Good shoes and a good mattress should always be invested in, because in life, when you are not standing in one, you are laying in the other.

You should not cut a baby’s fingernails until the child is over 12 months old, or they could grow up light-fingered.

Do not rock an empty cradle, or push an empty pram or sew anything for the child, until it is born and healthy. Any of these things could result in not a good outcome.

When a child laughs and gurgles watch their hands, if they keep their hands open when they laugh, it is said they will be generous in life, if they screw the hands into a fist it is said they will be mean with money or their affection.

From when a child is old enough to clasp something you offer them, always offer to the child the rattle or toy in the centre so they try to use the left and right hands together, to grab it from you. Try not to offer to either right or left predominately. Making the child grasp with both hands instead of left or right, will cause the child to be ambidextrous which in turn develops both sides of the brain equally, hence a more balanced and intelligent child.

A baby is said not to be safe from the fairies until it sneezes. Children born or conceived on 31st October are said to be born psychic. A child born on Good Friday is said to have a life of sorrows, but is able to lift others out of their sorrow.

A child born with hairy arms or legs will never be poor in life, and will always get want they want, but not always in a good way.

If a cat sneezes 3 times a cold will run through the household.

If a strange cat or dog pays you attention, it is said the angels are trying to let you know you have a wish, and it could well come true as long as the wish is not going to hurt or cause harm to anyone or anything. Finding a foreign coin means the same.

Best not to wear green or buy a green car unless green is lucky for you.

If you see a frog you are in for a transformation in your life.

If you see a black cat it is your lucky day, if it actually crosses your path it is said to be even luckier. If a white cat does this go home and call it a day! Strange how it is that we have been told it is a black cat! If a black cat enters a theatre during a rehearsal, the play or film will do well, if on the night of the opening they will run for a long time.

If a dog starts to howl or scratch at the door for no good reason, or if you dream of a black dog, it is supposed to be a warning of a death. It is thought that a dog’s senses are so acute it can see the Angel of Death on its way to collect the soul of the forth coming deceased.

If you see a white horse, make a wish.

It is best not to change your bed on a Friday or Sunday, Monday or Tuesday is best. If possible always face your bed with your head facing north, also try to put your bed parallel with the floor boards and luck will always be with you. Always put your right foot out of bed first, and if possible put your bed where you can get out of it on the right hand side, you don’t want to get out of the wrong side of the bed!

I have hundreds of these superstitions, so check out the other articles entitled, Folk Lore and Superstitions.
